It’s a known fact that no romantic relationship is easy, but when we want to figure out how to resolve an issue or clarify a misunderstanding that can form into an argument, resentment or disconnection we seek out help.

Couples therapy is a form of psychotherapy that can help improve a relationship when difficulties arise and feels like there’s no way out of it. 

Therapists who work with couples can use different techniques in their practice to help the couple realign and reconnect again. 

Some strategies may include

  • getting to know each partner separately or together;

  • expressing and identifying feelings that have not been healed from that past, or feelings that have never been shared within the couple;

  • finding solutions and suggestions to help correct negative behaviour patterns and/or focus on what is working that often gets missed when a couple feels disconnected. 

Last, strategies on how to communicate and/or learn about each other’s communication styles can be discussed in order to find new perspectives or be able to enhance conflict resolution skills.

Relationship issues that can be discussed during a couple therapy session can include:

  • on-going arguments over time;

  • feeling of disconnection;

  • marital affairs;

  • lack of intimacy;

  • and/or facing challenges due to life stressors.
